The UNC-Chapel Hill F&O IT Security Team is committed to supporting your productivity and safeguarding your digital assets. To that end, we periodically share essential security information to keep you informed and protected. Please take a moment to review the following recommendations, and feel free to reach out to us at 919-962-HELP or at go.unc.edu/foit if you have any questions.

Here are three easy things you should be doing at work and at home to prevent your accounts from being hacked.

  1. Stay Informed about Breaches:
    • Reach out to the F&O IT Security Team if you suspect you have been hacked – we have tools to discover if you have any exposed passwords.
    • For your personal accounts, consider visiting HaveIBeenPwned.com and enter your email to check for any past breaches.
      • Utilize the “Notify me” feature to receive alerts if your email is compromised.
  2. Implement Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):
    • Enable 2FA on all applicable sites, prioritizing email, phone and banking platforms.
    • Expedite UNC-Chapel Hill account access by signing up for Carolina Key.
    • For your personal accounts, explore 2FA applications like Authy or others mentioned on their site.
    • Optimize security by using separate logins for UNC accounts and 2FA-enabled apps.
  3. Maintain Diverse Passwords:
    • Employ a unique password for each site, even with subtle variations.
    • Simplify password management with a Password Manager.
    • UNC-Chapel Hill provides LastPass Family account to all staff for free.
    • Consider other reputable tools like BitWarden, KeePass, iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager.

Remember, our team is here to support you. If you need guidance on the above tips or would like a more in-depth consultation for you or your department, we’re here for you.
