Jonathan Pruitt, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations

And just like that, another busy semester is nearing a close. While students are preparing for exams, the staff of Finance and Operations should celebrate our successes and experiences that have contributed to growth in our work and our connection to each other and to the Carolina campus. As we near the end of the semester I want to take a moment to express my great appreciation to all of you.

I especially want to thank those of you who took the time to share your feedback on our strategic planning process in the recent survey we distributed. Your input on how we are doing today and how we can improve in the future will be a great help as we lay out the roadmap for the future of Finance and Operations at UNC-Chapel Hill. As we look to next year, we will be holding several open meetings to review the findings and thoughts for the future over the course of the semester. In the meantime, I invite you to learn more about the F&O strategic planning process.

The new year will bring one big change to Finance and Operations, and that is the loss of our Campus Safety and Risk Management division — including Environment, Health and Safety; Risk Management; UNC Police; Emergency Management and Planning; and Protection of Minors — led by Associate Vice Chancellor Derek Kemp. As outlined by Interim Chancellor Guskiewicz in his October 2019 memo, starting Jan. 6 Derek and his team will be moving into the new division headed by Carolina’s first vice chancellor for institutional integrity and risk management. I have valued Derek’s leadership and support, and while it has been an honor to have him as a direct member on my leadership team, I know we have many more days ahead of collaboration. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I thank all the members of the Campus Safety team for their service to Carolina.

Finally, as the weather turns colder and more unpredictable, I want to acknowledge the many Finance and Operations staff members who Make Carolina Go, no matter what Mother Nature throws at them. In this issue of “On the Go,” we celebrate our F&O foul weather heroes.

I wish you a successful conclusion of the semester and an enjoyable, restful break.

With sincere thanks for all you do,

Jonathan Pruitt
Vice Chancellor
UNC Finance and Operations
