The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked No. 11 in this year’s Universitas Indonesia Green Metric World University Ranking. The annual GreenMetric Ranking ranks campus sustainability worldwide. This year’s survey was the largest yet and included 516 universities from 74 countries. UNC-Chapel Hill ranked No. 4 among 59 participating U.S. universities.

Campuses are evaluated in six categories and UNC-Chapel Hill performed exceptionally well in the Transportation portion (No. 5) and Education portion (No. 10) of the survey. Four other indicators are measured by the survey: Setting and Infrastructure (UNC-90); Energy and Climate Change (UNC-89); Waste (UNC-13); and Water (UNC-19).

Launched in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia, the UI Green Metric ranking attempts to provide a “uniform system suitable to attract support from thousands of the world’s universities with numeric results allowing for quick comparisons amongst participants on the criteria of their commitment to addressing the problems of sustainability and environmental impact.”
