Re: New plan for employee recognition
Sent: Friday, August 25, 2017

This year has been a time of change for most of us – we have welcomed new staff, used new processes and worked smarter. I have met many of you and appreciate your willingness to share your concerns and ideas for improvement within Finance and the Service Center of Excellence (SCE). As I have shared with many of you during recent in-person meetings, we are continually looking for ways to incorporate our five guiding principles, listed below.

Discussions with Finance and SCE senior leadership have led to a new plan for employee recognition. The program we will begin to implement will recognize employees throughout the year, in addition to an annual celebration.

I realize this will be a change for Finance staff and the existing Finance Extra Mile Award program. Since we are phasing out this program, we will not hold a picnic this year or request nominations for the award. Please be assured that although the process for recognition will change, we want your input and participation now more than ever.

Instead of the Extra Mile Award and annual Finance employee picnic this year, we will begin meeting to discuss upcoming activities for the new program. Collette Brown, director of Continuous Improvement and Staff Development in SCE, is co-chairing the Employee Recognition Committee and has requested volunteers from all my reporting areas based on total staff numbers:

  • Budget, Planning and Analysis (1)
  • Enterprise Financial Accounting and University Controller (2)
  • Senior Assistant Vice Chancellor and Treasurer’s Office (3)
  • Service Center of Excellence (3)

Directors will communicate with staff about these opportunities. As in the past, unit representatives must have supervisory approval.

The new employee recognition program will be focused on how employees demonstrate the five guiding principles in their work.

  • Service Excellence
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement
  • Teamwork
  • Healthy, High-Performance Culture
  • Prudent Management & Leadership

The new program will recognize employees throughout the year as well as at an annual event in December. We will share more information as we form our committee and begin planning.
