Director of Auxiliary Services
Auxiliary Services Director Mike Freeman will retire Jan. 31, after more than 30 years in his position. Scott Myers, currently associate director of Auxiliary Services, will serve as interim director of Auxiliary Services, starting Feb. 1.
“The University has benefited greatly from Mike’s business acumen and leadership,” said Brad Ives, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises, in an announcement to staff.
Freeman began working at UNC in 1986 as snack shop supervisor and over the years took on greater responsibilities and new roles until he was named to his current role in 2001. Auxiliary Services is comprised of a number of campus departments, including Carolina Dining Services, Vending, UNC One Card, Person ID (PID) Office, Student Laundromats, Carolina Managed Print Services, Horace Williams Airport, University Mail Services, UNC Print Stop and Copy Center and contract management for Armored Car Services, Campus Banking/ATMs and Departmental Laundry Services.
Over the course of his career at the University, Freeman has led and participated in many critical and high-profile campus projects, including conducting a comprehensive analysis of the operations and the overall value of the University’s Electronic Office and Supply Department; serving on a working group tasked with reviewing the use of Social Security Numbers on campus; as well as reviewing the functionality of the University’s official ID card, which led to the establishment of the PID. He also participated in the planning and construction of the Rams Head multi-functional complex that revitalized south campus with a 700-space parking facility, residential dining hall, two-story recreation center and a campus convenience store with a retail dining location. In addition, for more than a year, Freeman simultaneously served as director of Auxiliary Services and interim director of the Facilities Services Division.
Freeman has also been actively involved in professional associations, including service as chair of Campus Card User Groups, chair for the National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU) Investment Committee and chair for NACCU’s Corporate Relations Committee.
The university will conduct a national search to fill the Auxiliary Services director position, according to Ives. “We wish Mike the best in his retirement,” Ives said. “While he will no doubt be missed by Auxiliary Services staff and many others on campus, I know he is excited to work on his golf game and to spend more time with his children and grandchildren.”
